Rafting on the Cheat – Aug 2009

We had a blast rafting one day on the Cheat with Blackwater Outdoor Adventures, based in Parsons, WV. From Ilam House we drove to Parsons (30 min drive) to the BOA compound, then ride their bus about 45 minutes to where we put in on the Cheat (above Cheat Narrows this time.) Lots of fun!

We have enjoyed Ilam in the winter with the great xcountry and downhill skiing nearby, but weren’t sure what to expect during a summer stay. It turned out to be a perfect headquarters for several days of great adventures nearby, including hikes through the Dolly Sods Wilderness, an incredible climb up to Chimney Rock on North Fork Mountain, ziplining over the tree canopy at Nelson Creek Outfitters, white water rafting — and then coming home to an easy dinner in the gourmet-kitchen, ping pong and family games, a soak in the hot tub, and then collapsing into comfortable beds in the privately-spaced bedrooms. To cap off our trip, we decided to spend the last night camping; after a sleepless night in a damp tent and a cold breakfast, one of our sons said wistfully, “I miss Ilam House.” We were all wishing we were still there! This is a great destination for enjoying family-time in a gorgeous natural setting and in a gorgeous and comfortable home.
