Whitegrass – Feb 2010 – Breaking Trail on Wilderness Trail

Off the picture to the right – the trail to the hot tub was clear!

We skiied from Ilam House, out Canaan Loop road, took the first trail off to right- few hundred yards past the gate, the right again on Plantation Trail to Hwy 32. Was a gorgeous, and tough, 4 hr ski – breaking trail through knee/thigh deep snow, and brushing aside all the rhododenrons and other trees and shrubs weighted down and blocking the trail.

We really enjoyed the wood stove at the Roundtop Warming hut on a cool February 13. We had a wonderful ski from the hut out along the Wilderness Trail, breaking trail some of the way through knee-deep velvet powder, through to Stone Coal Flats. Gorgeous!

Whitegrass XC Ski Center  (www.whitegrass.com) has skiing this weekend with 5 inches of snow (also 5″ at Ilam House!). First skiing of winter 09-10 in the Mid-Atlantic!

At end of Allegheny Trail ski – starting at Canaan Heights, and then skiing south 8 miles to Canaan Valley State Park. It was Presidents’ Day 2007, and we had a snow storm dump about a foot of snow on us that day – wonderful!

Ilam House is on the ridge line of Canaan Mountain at about 3700 feet, and gets more snow (and more dependable snow cover) than areas down in the heart of Canaan Valley.

Ilam House is 3 miles from Davis, WV,  about a 3 hour drive from Pittsburgh, and about 3.75 hours from Baltimore or DC area. Read about how to get to Ilam House.

Ilam House is a new, contemporary, and very comfortable house for a skiing vacation for groups of up to twelve. The house has a modern, open family area with fireplace, and a large “chef’s kitchen”. It also has a large play room with Ping Pong (and sofa bed), 2 bedroom suites and 2 bedrooms with queen/twin bunks. The hot tub on the outside deck is a real treat after a day of skiing! The house is adjacent to the Monongahela National Forest for cross-country skiers who want to strike out on their own (see above picture!). The house is also about five miles from Whitegrass Cross Country ski center – one of our favorite places on the planet, and also Timberline downhill skiing, and Canaan Valley downhill skiing. And the house is just 3 miles from the small town of Davis, with a few very friendly and tasty restaurants. Read more about these and other area favorites.
