    thanks Chris and Eugenie!!!
can’t wait to go stay at Ilam house for the annual ladies’ ski weekend. You’re so nice to offer it…it’s beautiful!

As glorious as this house is for skiers, I can personally attest to its perfection for hang-out-all-day-in-the-housers. Due to some minor surgery, I just spent four heavenly days *all indoors* at Ilam House, and it is just stunning. Chris and Eugenie, you’ve thought of everything, every little comfort and convenience. It’s the house of my dreams.

We’re already plotting ways to get back, and I’m looking forward to the next women’s ski weekend, when I will….. actually….. SKI! Downhill.

many thanks and congratulations on the perfect vacation home,

How nice to go on vacation — and actually feel like you’ve been on vacation. Ilam House is so well-equipped that all the little routine tasks of daily living seem to take care of themselves. The house is so comfortable that it’s tempting to not want to leave it, even for the great skiing right out the front door. The hot tub was a highlight. Well-designed, a warm aesthetic, and how restful to wake up and see trees all around. Guests will leave feeling well-rested and invigorated at the same time. Highly recommended.

We had an awesome stroll to the put-in on the Upper B. It was running about 200 with only a little ice. We sure wish we had brought the boats! Next time for sure. Red Creek and the North Fork of the Blackwater are possible scouting expeditions for today. Next time we’re here lets hope the Upper B has some more water.

We had a very relaxing and play-filled weekend! The kids enjoyed a ping-pong tournament and the hot tub. Husband enjoyed sitting by the fire and playing Scrabble. I enjoyed knitting in the plush furniture, trying out all the seats like Goldilocks. My favorite thing about the house and this weekend, however, was how we could stretch out everywhere, including the kitchen. I wish my kitchen at home was as nice and functional as this one! I love the soapstone counter-tops and the 6 burner stove. My husband and I could work well together in the kitchen (quite a feat) AND enjoy the company of friends hanging out with us. Great traffic flow, great space to spread out in, and a very spa-like feel. Thanks so much! We’ll be back.

It was a chilly and drizzly night that we spent in absolute comfort at Ilam House, after kayaking on a nearby white water river. The location was close to so many of our favorite runs, that we had only to drive 1/2 hr. in any direction to be at the put-in of one of them. Thanks very much Chris for a little island of modernity in the midst of the great West Virginia outdoors. Very comfy!

We just returned from a wonderful long weekend at Ilam House. I second every compliment above, and would add that we were also delighted by the abundance of bath towels and mugs! Your home is beautiful, and that hot tub was amazing!

We hope to return next year with a larger group, and wonder if any of the neighboring homes might be available to rent as well. If you know of any, would you please let us know?
    Many Thanks,

Temple- thanks for the remarks. In terms of renting the other houses on Canaan Loop road – the house on the other side of the cul de sac and about half way up the hill *may* be available for rent. You can check with the folks at Mountain Top Realty (who manage Ilam House.)

When I first saw the name “Ilam House,” I misread it as “11 am House,” which I took to mean that it’s such a relaxing destination, no one wants to wake or stir before 11 am. Now that I’ve actually been a guest, I’m sticking with “11 am House.” Our weekend stay was thorougly relaxing, and after a day of snowshoeing, what pleasure to come home to the hot tub, and to enjoy meals cooked in one of the best equipped kitchens I’ve ever seen. This is a perfect destination for your annual ski-trip, family getaway, or even a retreat spot for a small office or work group.

But it also requires a prodigious ability to construct the proper meaning on the basis of linguistic and nonlinguistic context. ,

A good ski house should be entertaining for the down time, especially with a big family. Ilam House sounds like the perfect accomodations.

We have enjoyed Ilam in the winter with the great xcountry and downhill skiing nearby, but weren’t sure what to expect during a summer stay. It turned out to be a perfect headquarters for several days of great adventures nearby, including hikes through the Dolly Sods Wilderness, an incredible climb up to Chimney Rock on North Fork Mountain, ziplining over the tree canopy at Nelson Creek Outfitters, white water rafting — and then coming home to an easy dinner in the gourmet-kitchen, ping pong and family games, a soak in the hot tub, and then collapsing into comfortable beds in the privately-spaced bedrooms. To cap off our trip, we decided to spend the last night camping; after a sleepless night in a damp tent and a cold breakfast, one of our sons said wistfully, “I miss Ilam House.” We were all wishing we were still there! This is a great destination for enjoying family-time in a gorgeous natural setting and in a gorgeous and comfortable home.

I hesitate to let the secret out but we LOVE Ilam House! We have stayed there 2 winters in a row and have found it the absolute perfect house for family and friends. It is purpose built for skiing and is designed so well for ease of flow, etc. The kitchen is phenomenal. It is very close to Whitegrass and other skiing destinations and, if you free heel, you can ski right out of the backdoor on to trails. We loved it so much we are considering a summer stay to try out the trails, fishing, and such. We have stayed in many rental homes on trips previously and we always compare them to this place– we still have not found one to beat it. One note– when they say 4 wheel drive recommended in Winter they are not joking. If you get a good snow the hill leading down to the house is treacherous.

Thank you for sharing your lovely home with us for the summer. We enjoyed the quietness and hiking the many trails by your house.
